The insect production unit was started in
1963, and is now the largest of its kind in Canada. This study
supplies insects not only to scientists at the Great Lakes
Forestry Centre, but also to other forestry establishments,
universities,and
research centres in Canada and the United States. Some 14
insect species are reared, in numbers totaling over 4.5 million
per year. Successes include the development of non-diapause
strains of some insects such as the western spruce budworm.
In addition, the first laboratory cultures of hemlock looper
and fir coneworm were established here.
About 5,000 litres of artificial diet are
prepared and dispensed annually to support the insects reared.
The diet has been modified to provide better insect growth
and to suit the needs of various insects.
